Story behind : A. Vivaldi : WINTER FAIRY TALE


My name is Marija Popovic and I would like to present my second author video to you. I am using this short film to take you on a journey to Venice guided by the music of the glorious composer Antonio Vivaldi! His famous Winter has always inspired me as a pianist, and now I finally have the opportunity to represent it through the special Christmas fairytale as a director!
When we think about winter, we think Christmas, New Year’s eve, family, presents and stories. Therefore, the connection between music and a fairytale inspired scenography came naturally. That is why the first and the last scene are an allusion to a fairytale The “Princess and the Pea”. This time, the story has two protagonists – a Queen and a Princess. In a symbolic way, it is showcased what dreams are made of when you are an adult and in contrast what the children dream about. Through the representations of “a mother and a little dreamer” we can sense the hidden paths this ‘royal road to the unconscious’, as Froyd calls it, can take us on.
The cyclic structure of Vivaldi’s violin concerto, now arranged for piano and strings, reminded me of a magical circle formed by the changing of seasons. Piano, along with the musical part, now has another significant role – to represent the four seasons as a symbol of perpetual cycle of birth and death. For that reason the paintings of the baroque artist Giuseppe Archimboldo were critical to piano decoration, my makeup and hair style in the scenes I’m shown playing. These are the famous Archimboldo’s portraits inspired by the seasons and the elements: air, fire, earth and water.We can see the four ‘piano’ seasons in the scene of frosty winter, snow melting in the spring, exotic summer and red autumn – an allusion to Vivaldi’s nickname ‘The Red Priest’!
During the film I also appear as Vivaldi himself. I am trying to imagine what he had in mind while writing this music and I see him metaphorically as a painter that paints the winter, fantasizing about the winter idyll – a rare phenomenon in his birth town.
(The scene represents a fantasy between 21. Century minimalism and costumed baroque, and Vivaldi’s hairstyle is based on models from a few photographs of him that remained)
The Snow Queen is the second Andersen’s fairytale which inspired this short film. My Ice Kingdom is set in a Venetian castle, in a room full of toys and imbued with Christmas atmosphere, where instead of the boy named Kai a girl named Gerda plays now.
The second part of this story is related to Vivaldi’s painting and shows the magic of winter in all its glory. Gerda, the princess of winter, is freely sledding in the snow, serving as a contrast to the original version of the story in which the Snow Queen in her ice sleigh takes Kai away from the snow swept village to her Ice Kingdom.
