Mitch Gallagher puts the BOSS SY-300 guitar synth to the test in this episode of Guitars and Gear. It's BOSS's most advanced guitar synthesizer yet: no special pickup is required, the tracking is ultra-fast, and it allows for polyphonic playing and tracks chords very well. Four footswitches allow you to switch presets as well as modulate the synth tone. Four built-in effects processors can be added anywhere in the internal signal path, and there's even a send/return loop for adding external effects.

One extremely cool thing about the SY-300 is that the tone actually changes when you switch pickups on your guitar. That's because the SY-300 is generating its sound based on what it's hearing from your pickups. Factor in the ability to bend strings and play with vibrato, and you've got one of the most expressive guitar synth systems around.

If you want to extend your sonic range beyond typical guitar tones, the BOSS SY-300 is a great solution that doesn't require you to add an extra pickup to your guitar. Thanks for watching!

Ever wondered why so many top session bassists use P basses?

Ever wondered why certain producers and engineers almost flat out refuse to track with anything other than a P bass?

It's weird, right?

Well, in this lesson I've got a very special guest with me... the LA session legend, Sean Hurley. Bassist for the likes of John Mayer, Robin Thicke, Idena Menzell and many, many more.

And you're about to hear his story about the P bass.

About the time when he turned up to the studio with his active 5 string, cut the track... and then was politely told...

"great playing, but errrr... that bass sound... errrr... I'm sure we'll be able to fix it in the mix"

Bass. Players. Nightmare.

Let's be serious.

Any musicians nightmare!

Obviously, check out the video... and find out what happened next, and how it was a defining moment in Sean's career.

As always, see you in the shed...

Scott :)

Right now over 10, 000 bass players are enrolled in the Academy here at Scott's Bass Lessons and are making a real difference to their playing... if you're really serious about getting your bass playing together, click here to find out more and grab your 14 day free trial: https://bit.ly/2A0hIfJ

Guitar Synthesizer Shootout

In this video, I come clean about my true love: guitars. I also demonstrate several guitar synthesizers: a Godin Montreal Premiere outfitted with a Fishman Triple Play interface, a Godin LGXT with built-in Roland electronics connected to a Roland GR-1, a Yamaha G10, and a special surprise at the end.

The main sound used by the guitar synths is the new Waves Electric 200 Wurlitzer VST.

Electro-Harmonix MEL9 Tape Replay Machine

The new MEL9 Tape Replay Machine emulates vintage Mellotron® sounds and uses the same ground breaking technology that powers the award-winning B9 and C9 Organ Machines, plus the KEY9 Electric Piano Machine. Nine of the most famous sounds are included: Orchestra, Cello, Strings, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Brass, Low Choir and High Choir.

MEL9 works on guitar without modifications, special pickups or MIDI implementation and tracks bends, slides, even whammy dive bombs! It also works with bass guitar down to the open A string and keyboards, too.

Watch as Bill Ruppert takes you on a tour of the MEL9 and re-creates some of the most iconic sounds of classic rock!

19:43 Boss GP-10 User Demo with Editor

Boss GP-10 User Demo with Editor

A demo of the new GP-10 guitar processor from Boss.

This video aims to give an insight into the powerful capabilities of the GP-10. I’m using the Boss Editor as this gives the best visual representation, however, most editing can be done on the unit itself.

The recording was done over the GP-10's USB output into Logic 9.

I’m using a GK3 equipped Epiphone Les Paul Standard. In the first part of the video I do a comparison of the actual magnetic pickups of the guitar and the modelled pickups via the GK3 by selecting Elec gtr and LP. This is done both clean and through an emulated amp. The pickups fitted to the Epi are Iron Gear Dirty Torque and Blues Engine. Differences could be down to the type of pickup Boss has modelled.

I take a quick look at the effects section and at the instruments modelled, i.e banjo, sitar, acoustic, synths etc..

I also look at the altered tuning capabilities then finish up by demoing some of the patches available via download and some of the standard presets.

NB: everything is being done in real time.

Having problems with tracking on the OSC synth so have left this for another demo maybe.

This is only scratching the surface of what this can do. You can use a normal guitar input and use it as an upfront fx and amp modeller. Put it in the effects loop as a multi-effects. Plug it straight into a power amp and have all options available providing you have a GK3 equipped guitar. You can also just use it for down tuning by selecting the modelled pickup of your type of guitar and bypassing everything else. You can then instantly tune your guitar to anything you like at the push of a switch.

Nearly all parameters are assignable to the expression controller or one of the CTL switches on the unit. Has additional CTL socket for say a Boss FS-6 footswitch for more control.

It also has an eight track USB interface. This will will record a stereo pair and each of the six strings onto its own separate track in your DAW. This enables re-amping as well as re-guitaring! Also has pitch to MIDI over USB so you can play soft synths etc. on your Mac or PC.

A few limitations are: no standard MIDI connection. Non standard USB compliant interface. No option for 4CM.

Hours of fun to be had!

Thanks for watching.
