Finally Got Our Hay Field Cut

Finally Got Our Hay Field Cut

Август 4, 2017

With our sickle breaking and trying to track down part we are way over due for cutting the field. We should be doing (or have done) our second cut by now and we have not even done the first cut yet!

14:22 Putting up Loose Hay with Farmall Cub, John Deere Hayloader

Putting up Loose Hay with Farmall Cub, John Deere Hayloader

We put up loose hay for the first time on our farm! Cut with our Farmall Cub, raked with an International Harvester 14 rake, and picked up with our John Deere hayloader and David Bradley hay wagon. We made two different types of hay stacks and really like using two cattle panels in a hoop and covering with a tarp. We plan to build a barn next year with a hay mow (already have a hay trolley and forks). Hay is always a lot of work!

Cutting the hayfield

The hay is Alfalfa, red and white clover, oats, and hay or field grass. The tractor is the 620 not the 630. This is the first crop planted and harvested by us as new farmers. Were very proud! Send Me a $ tip PayPal.Me/mommymilestones

10:41 First time cutting hay and we could have died (but didn't)!

First time cutting hay and we could have died (but didn't)!

If you remember last week, we mentioned that we had hay equipment to unload off the trailer and get it ready to start haying for the first time this week. We got the equipment off. The cutter was in decent shape and we did manage to get a couple passes in the meadow before the first piece showed its age. The pitman arm cracked after hitting a dirt mound (an old ant hill). After we made a replacement out of hand railing from Home Depot, we tried again. We found yet another problem. The mechanic of the farm didn't reassemble it correctly. Once we figured out the problem, we tried again. And we had success! The cutting teeth are in desperate need of replacement, but they got us through this cutting season and we'll replace them before next year.

With the field cut, it was on to raking the grass into rows for the baler to pick up. We replaced a lot of the fingers / tines that rake the grass. That tuned into a lot of time just making sure they wouldn't hit. The arms are work and need to be rebuilt (another thing for the Winter this year). We made a pass feeling great and then it all went bad. We were already down one arm of six, and another came apart. It nearly killed us. Ok, not so much death, but really it was scary to see it fling at speed. We got it back to the garage and cut it off and went back to raking at a very low speed.

The big question, and where we leave you this week, is how much hay will we get from all this work and agony? Tune in next week to find out!

We are a small off-grid homestead in south central Oregon living the best sustainable life as possible. We raise goats, rabbits, and heritage birds. Follow along as we divulge our secrets to surviving off-grid on solar power and growing our own food.

3:42 How to rake hay the 1960s way!

How to rake hay the 1960s way!

How to rake hay for alfalfa hay. June, 2013. Pulling a New Holland rake with a Ford 3000 diesel. Glenn combines two 9 foot swaths of cut alfalfa into one "windrow", a term used to describe a row of raked hay that is picked up by the baler. A windrow is a row of cut (mowed) hay or small grain crop. It is allowed to dry before being baled, combined, or rolled. For hay, the windrow is often formed by a hay rake, which rakes hay that has been cut by a mower machine or by scythe into a row, or it may naturally form as the hay is mowed. For small grain crops which are to be harvested, the windrow is formed by sickle bar mower or hay conditioner (haybine) which both cuts the crop and forms the windrow.Happy viewing!
