I build a LM2576-based switching power supply for my workbench. The version I build is fixed 5V with an adjustable currently limiter, but I describe how to make a fully adjustable one as well. Visit my blog at http://www.smbaker.com/

PART 2 is HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Otr1I0OR18
Dave shows you how to design a simple constant current and constant voltage lab power supply that can be either software (PIC/AVR et.al microcontroller) or traditional pot controlled.
Starting with the venerable LM317, and ending up with an LT3080 solution, and the some thought processes that go into it all.
Part 1 is the conceptual design of this Open Hardware design.

Learn how to limit the charging current of a supercapacitor. Texas Instruments (TI) applications engineer Amy Le walks you through the block diagram, provides sample calculations, and demonstrates how to precisely limit the output current of a switching regulator.

Yes, I know my hands are large/fat. It's because of a heart condition I suffer from called Congestive Heart Failure. Here's a link to some information about CHF: https://cle.clinic/2TdS2Ux
One of the symptoms is that is causes fluid retention, mostly in the hands, feet/ankles, and face.
It will kill me one day. I'm doing ok right now, but someday...

There's a really useful variant of the LM2596 voltage regulator called the LM2596HV which can handle 60 volts on its input. But be careful — some that I bought recently turned out to be fake. At about 50v, the regulator became unstable and died which could very easily destroy whatever you have connected to the output.

Often not understand is what else you need to make that LED work correctly. Learn what current limiting resistors do for LEDs and watch what happens when you don't use one.
For this video we go the lab and run so much current through a LED, it destroys itself!

In this episode of HACKED! we will have a closer look at the circuit of an ATX PC power supply aka a switched mode power supply (SMPS) and find out whether it is possible to modify so that it outputs a variable voltage.
