Otto, Rollo, and Apollo are eight-month-old orphaned black bear cubs. At present, they’re residing in a Wild Enclosure at Appalachian Bear Rescue until they’re big enough to be released back to the wild later this year. The cubs are in the grips of “hyperphagia”, the yearly phase in a black bear’s life that compels it to eat as much as possible in preparation for winter and hibernation. The cubs are gaining weight and exercising their “right to climb” at every opportunity. We’re particularly pleased with Apollo’s progress; he’s recovering from surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine following a car accident that left him with a broken right forearm. After weeks of enforced “no climbing” in the Red Roof Recovery Center and in an Acclimation Pen, Apollo can climb with vigor. Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR), located just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Townsend, Tennessee, is a rehabilitation center for orphaned and injured black bear cubs. MANY parents struggle to maintain discipline in their home. But spare a thought for Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose main charge is a huge 1400lb Kodiak brown bear. The couple look after the 9ft giant at their orphanage where they have dedicated their lives to rescuing and releasing injured animals. They now care for 11 bears, including Kodiak brown bears, Syrian bears and black bears on their 100 acre estate in Otisville, New York. Most were rescued as cubs from breeding programs or nature reserves that closed down.

We’re using this video to launch our 2017 "Return to the Wild Campaign". We hope to raise $20, 000 to help us provide food and vet services for our residents. Like most construction projects, our Red Roof Recovery Center exceeded the planned budget and still needs finishing touches to make it a safe place for future injured bears. Please click on the link and select “Return to The Wild Campaign” under “DESIGNATE THIS GIFT FOR A SPECIFIC PURPOSE”. Thank you! https://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/51586/donate_page/donate?track=Website_Donate_Page_Link

Otto is a three-month-old orphaned black bear cub currently residing in The Cub House at Appalachian Bear Rescue. Our curators try to provide small challenges for Otto to mitigate the stress of confinement and to encourage the development of his coordination and strength. Soon, Otto will be released to a Wild Enclosure where he can climb trees and practice foraging in preparation for his return to the wild later this year.

We're ending our 20th Anniversary year with a revised slideshow of most of the 257 black bear cubs and yearlings we've admitted over the last two decades. Thanks to your support, we'll keep giving bears a second chance at life in the wild.

We hope you enjoy this video of Otto and Rollo, our six-month-old orphaned black bear cubs. Filmed in short segments over several hours on a single, hot summer’s day, it records the cubs climbing trees and taking dips in The Cubby Pool. Otto is bigger than Rollo; he’s darker and a strong swimmer. It’s delightful to watch Rollo negotiate the Pool before deciding the Cub Tub might be a better fit for him.

Summitt Bear, our 14-month-old black bear yearling, has made remarkable progress since he arrived at Appalachian Bear Rescue on March 27, 2017. He weighs 24 pounds, a gain of two pounds, and is healthy enough to move from The Cub Nursery to The Cub House where he’ll have more room and places to climb. We’re hopeful this little bear will continue to improve.
