28:8 Rare Antique Ball Motor [Restoration]

Rare Antique Ball Motor [Restoration]

This restoration is on a 1910s ball-shaped motor off of a medical vibrator. The "Cologne Vibrator" was made and sold by the F.S Betz Co. of Hammond, Indiana. F.S Betz Co. started in 1909 and was the world's largest supplier of medical equipment by time it was sold in 1937. Betz also produced cars and ran an airline for a short time.
Oddly, there is not much information about this company on the internet. I hope to find the attachments that were powered by this motor: https://i.imgur.com/xOcZkJu.png.

Taking this motor apart was a lot of fun since it was a giant puzzle. The moment I found this motor I wanted to know how it was put together inside and why it was designed in this shape. The motor housings were completely japanned and I did my best to recreate that look with modern finishes. I am hoping to have a large oven hooked up in my workshop so I can do some real japanning soon.

The motor was actually in fairly decent condition for being over 100 years old and just needed some de-rusting and cleaning to get back on it's feet.

A lot of parts were nickel-plated brass, so I took the chance to remove the nickel-plated where I thought it would look best.

The motor now runs well with fresh grease, but spins very fast. I was surprised at how fast it was and I wish I had a tachometer to see the exact speed. I plan on keeping this motor so I can be reminded about finding the attachments to it.

I would like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

7:18 The Big Bowl Turning: Stacked Ring Technique

The Big Bowl Turning: Stacked Ring Technique

Turning a big 19.5" x 6" bowl out of maple and cherry, using the really cool process of stacked ring lamination. The concept is similar segmented bowl turning, but works a little differently. Just like segmented turning a lot of gluing is involved, but the clever cut rings make it a little more efficient and very economic.

I will be posting an an article on the website soon, to provide more detail about the process, so keep an eye out!

45:19 Woodturning - The 'Continental' Vessel

Woodturning - The 'Continental' Vessel

My etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/TAGwoodworking?ref=seller-platform-mcnav
The vessel has been sold. For interest in this particular design: [email protected]
This project was made possible, thanks to the 2 species of wood supplied in an exchange project between 3 woodworkers in Portland Oregon, U.S and 3 woodworkers in Utrecht The Netherlands. http://utrecht-portland.com/ The idea for all involved was to make an object with slabs of 2 species. Oregonian Myrtle wood and local harvested Maple combined. The largest part of inspiration comes from the native tribes in Oregon, and by looking at some old symbols the tribes use(d).
The name 'continental' was inspired by the project itself, and the lines and colors in the wood used.Which i found looking like a map.
The stopper was inspired by where the maple came from, a tree on a childrens playground in Utrecht. It also resembles the merging of the 2 species for me. The Process — this wasMy more a project that evolved slowly, as i went along. The basic idea i had was to make something tribal. I really enjoy this type of process, letting your thoughts and choices at each particular stage decide the final outcome. Without forcing yourself to stick to pre-made drawings/designs.
