This covers the design and construction of a large 120 Watt LED light fixture for planted or reef aquariums. Using 40x 3w star LED’s and 1” square aluminum tubing.
For reef aquariums, substitute actinic (440nm) Blue LED’s for the red used here – the 660nm Red is ideal for freshwater planted tanks.
This fixture was designed for a 5-foot-long planted aquarium. You will need to adjust the bulb spacing and number of bulbs for shorter lengths, possibly requiring a smaller (able to support a smaller minimum number of bulbs) ballast. I recommend you place the bulbs no closer than 1 ½ inches on center together. For a 6ft or longer tank, I recommend two fixtures for better cooling and air flow.
Supplies:
# total cost Description
1 22$ 10’x1” square aluminum tube
2 18$ 600mA constant current LED drivers (120v AC In, 54-105v DC out)
20 10$ 660nm RED 3W LED star (use 440nm Blue for reef)
20 8$ 5500Kelvin White 3W LED star
1 18$ 60mm 120v cooling fan
1 8$ 2-part epoxy (JB weld)
11 — assorted screws — - Wire, electrical plug, wire nuts, tape, solder — - wood/metal/plastic trim for bottom edge of lamp
Total: ~84$

It's Week 21 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are premiering the highly anticipated LED lighting video. This is the week you have been waiting for: LEDs.
#BRS160
We are going to start with the general pros and cons including why so many reefers have gravitated to LED’s over the years, evaluate LED in general based on the same criteria we used on T5 and halides, discuss what you should look for in a LED option, and breakdown of some of the most popular options and finish with how to tune your LED’s PAR, spectrum and shimmer.
So follow along, and be sure to let us know about your favorite lighting in the comments area down below! Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for next week's video where we uncover which lighting system we chose for the BRS160.

WATCH THIS VIDEO ON A COMPUTER, FOR SOME REASON THE POPUP NOTATIONS DON'T COME UP ON MOBILE.
I tried a few different DIY live Rock recipes, this seems the most realistic and stable recipe I have come up with, this is a combination of several You Tube videos I watched and some experimentation on my part, I hope it works for you.... good luck! Any questions email me at [email protected].

Here's how to make a phenomenally bright 1000w eqiv. LED flashlight!
Here's the LED we'll be using: http://ebay.to/2COMXJw
It's designed to be operated with just one hand, with easy control of brightness, and can be powered by either batteries or an AC adapter.
Can be built for around £25 if you get the CPU cooler for cheap.
