Quick Review of the Viewsonic G-Tablet 10. 1
A few perople were asking me what I thought of my new G-Tablet 10.1 compared to the iPad, and the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Personally, I think that if you are in the market for a tablet, and don’t necessarily NEED to have the top of the line tab, then this is definitely what you are looking for. Priced at around $250-275, you can’t find anything that offers as much for what you are paying.

Viewsonic G Tablet running custom ROM CyanogenMod 7. x
This is a quick review of the Viewsonic G Tablet running Gingerbread 2.3 Android via a custom ROM which I installed thanks to two sites:

I’ve tried the honeycomb Roms and they are just not ready for primetime, After trying Mountain Laurel, Brilliant Corners, TnT Lite, Bottle of Smoke, and Flashback (never ran it, crashed) I have settled on this ROM and it is rock solid like my stock HTC Thunderbolt. Only annoyance is I cannot skype with the stock microphone.
One thing I forgot to mention in the review is that you can plug in a USB mouse or keyboard. Very Handy.

NVFlash for Dummies & ICS on the ViewSonic gTab
This video demonstrates the use of the EASY NVFlash tool to clean up the gTab. (If the device is stuck or looping, this will probably clear it.)
It also prepares the gTab for a trouble-free install of a custom ROM. The process is pretty much the same regardless of which ROM you use but I install the TeamDRH ICS (version 1.3b). Done in real time & includes a (minor) mistake (grin).

Viewsonic G-Tab running JellyBean

This tablet is by far the heaviest but sturdiest 10 inch tablet I’ve come across. I’ve had it for awhile immediately rooting it and taking it up to ICS after I got it. I recently upgraded it to JB and have now found another JB ROM (4.2 based) that I will likely install on it shortly. This tab can be a bit pokey and downright nutty at times but it has held up fairly well. It’s one of the few tablets with hardware buttons like a smartphone and actually has a reset hole that you’d have to drill into the plastic if you want to hit it (the origin of the name of team DRH-dirty reset hole).
Most often, JB and ICS ROMs on this device break the front facing camera but due to the full sized USB port, you can use just about any USB camera to make up for it and even get better quality out of it.

Bring Your Android Tablet Back To Life — Part 1

It wasn’t easy though and as you know if you downloaded the firmware, every device is made different with different chip-sets and touch-screens and from different factories in China, so the firmware doesn’t work with every tablet out of the box.
Unless of course you edit the configuration files manually and know what you are doing.
In these two videos I will show you a better and faster firmware for your 7 inch Android tablet, it’s not bloated with crap that will slow it down and has everything you need, including a louder speaker output, louder sound recording, less resource use, A browser with iPad user-agent so you can switch between sites that use html5, (faster than flash), Email, WiFi, 3G, Video, Photos, Camera, a working YouTube and a working Android market. Plus lots more. Angry Birds and Flash 10.1 are installed.
Anything else you want to add, you can get from the Android Market.
Watch the videos before you do anything and be sure you can revert back to your old firmware if anything goes wrong.
To save you hours of time, I have made a firmware that works out of the box with the Wondermedia 7 inch tablets.
If you have a different tablet, maybe another brand or with a different size screen, then you will need to use the configuration utility in my download and pray it works. If it doesn’t work, keep trying different brand types until you get there. If everything seems to work and it’s just your touch-screen that fails you will probably need to edit the prop file and uboot file, so watch the videos to see how.

G-Tablet Full Restore your Gtablet using nvflash — refresh to factory
Pensacola Computers Presents — Restore your G-Tablet using nvflash. Flashing your gtab back to factory using bekit’s original image (thanks to xda-developers). If your Gtablet gets messed up, use this method to restore it back to original using nvflash.*NOTE: the tegra msi file is no longer avail — You will need APX drivers and files available from xda-developers or Slatedroid: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/17150-recovery-nvflash-full-restore-using-either-11-or-12-based-images-g-tablet/ — see the forum threads there. G-tablet errors can be annoying so to fix your gtab and start fresh, use the nvflash to go back to the beginning. Make sure to follow the most recent instructions on Slatedroid or XDA for nvflash recovery as some things have changed since this video was made — if you have used different ROMS and/or get stuck in a bootloop, you may have to repartition your device through CWM (clockword mod) ** PLEASE GO AND GET THE LATEST FILES FROM XDA or SLATEDROID before attempting — if you get stuck, follow the re-partition instructions

This is a quick look at my Install of Zyhong’s GtabComb beta 3.1 ROM (updated 7/11/2011) for Gtablet\Zpad T2. Quick description: Looks GREAT! The interface is very different and takes a little while to get accustomed to but it is smooth with only a few lock-ups. Those may have been my fault.
