Refilling your Canon 250, 250XL, 251, 251XL or 255XXL ink cartridges allows you to re-use your ink cartridges over and over which saves on ink costs and supports the environment by reducing land fill.

Since the cartridge’s smart chip was NOT replaced during ink refilling, after the refilled ink cartridge is installed into the printer*, you will observe various low ink and nuisance error messages, including red X warnings — this is completely NORMAL and you can simply bypass the various alert messages.

The printer will NOT be able to track the refilled ink cartridge ink levels.* The ink level indicator will falsely signal empty. As you just returned from your refill store, your refilled ink cartridges are not empty.

Your printer or computer will display ink alert messages, such as «remaining ink cannot be correctly detected» or «printing under the current condition may damage the printer». Press «OK», «Yes» or «Close» to dismiss alert prompts, or press «OK» on the printer.

If the power or low ink indicator lights blink, the printer stops printing and ’Support Code: 1600, 1683, or 1688’ alert messages are displayed, DO NOT select «Cancel Printing» if prompted by computer.

Instead, press the «OK» or «Resume» button (down arrow/triangle-circle) on your printer, for 5-8 seconds, until the low ink indicator goes out, the power light stops blinking and/or the printer resumes printing.

After the low ink, empty and nuisance messages are bypassed, ink tracking will no longer be available...the refilled cartridge ink level tracking icons will appear greyed out or empty — this is NORMAL when using refilled ink cartridges.

You may continue to print until the print quality fades. If you are unsure which color is fading or empty, activate the printer’s internal self test print to evaluate which color, or colors, is currently out.

Refilled Canon ink cartridges can be used for ’up to one year’ from the refill date providing the protective cap is firmly installed. To help avoid printhead drying issues, install a new ink cartridge immediately after removing an expended one.

NOTE: It is suggested you refill your cartridge as soon as you see the print quality begin to fade — don’t wait until the last color runs dry! Continuing to print with a cartridge that is running dry can result in both poor image quality and may inadvertently dry out the printhead. While the ink cartridges, or tanks, hold the ink, it is the electronic printhead which is responsible for firing the ink drops onto the page. The Printhead is essentially the heart of the entire printing system.

As soon as you remove the cartridge from your printer, place the protective cap onto the ink spout, provided with your initial refill. This will prevent leaking and help prevent the internal foam from drying out. The internal foam can harden without the moisture provided by the presence of ink.

CAUTION: Leaving cartridges uninstalled for long periods of time will dry out the printhead and may prevent the product from printing. White streaks may be visible in the printed text or graphic. Printing alone may not remove clogs from the nozzles, sometimes a ’Head Cleaning’ may need to be initiated from printer’s control menu or printer software.

To help identify which color is out, print an internal self-test print or choose one of the test prints from http://www.inkjet411.com website (refer to Test Prints). Test prints are designed to fire all nozzles, by color, and will aid in determining which color is out.

To help maintain printhead health, it is suggested to print on a regular basis using all colors, perhaps once or twice a week — this will become more important as the printer ages.
