#26 - Gear Made on a 10" Atlas Lathe

#26 - Gear Made on a 10" Atlas Lathe

Ноябрь 14, 2016

This video is about making a gear on a lathe. The indexing holes on the bull-gear were worn out, and the looseness accumulated at the last tooth which became narrower than the rest of them. Luckily the extra cut of that tooth was not on the driven side, so it did not matter. The gear worked fine but a bit louder than the original plastic one. Eventually all plastic gears broke in the gearbox and they were changed to steel gears in time. The worst time break happened when working on a Rockwell mill, this will come later. Final indexing was done by welding a flat-bar into a sleeve and held by the end of the screw. A pin was attached to this bar which was forced between teeth by the extended part of the flat-bar (not shown) and pulled into the gears firmly by several bangy chords. I needed 30 teeth so every other gap of the indexing gear was used. The advantage of this locator system was that the chuck did not have to be held during the shaping operation. The shaping operation took over 5000 strokes and 2 days, resulting in a painful wrist. At that time I had no horizontal mill, this pre-WWII 10" Atlas Lathe had to do the job. I did this job once before in steel 60 years ago on my grandfather big old lathe.

Broaching external gears on lathe - planetary gear

PLEASE DO NOT ASK HOW I INDEXED IT!! READ THE INFO BEFORE AND YOU WILL FIND THE LINK TO THE VIDEO!! THANK YOU

Hi all, I need some planetary gears for my model...
I had an old battery-powered drill with this type of reduction, but unfortunately too high (1: 6) and non-standard metric module (0.7), so I decided to turn my lathe to a broaching machine... I used the gears of my lathe that give me the chance to do almost all possible divisions. Now I can produce my own planetary gears with a 1:4 ratio!
If you have patience, you will find more videos on my channel of this work...
I leave the link anyway:

Cutting threads and worm gears on a lathe

In this video I cut three kinds of screws — the leadscrew, show how I'll cut and polish the small screws that hold everything together, and the worm gear that drives the small dial. A tutorial on threading on the lathe will come later.

#10 - Verifying Tailstock alignment. The easiest, fastest, simplest way ever.

Verifying tailstock alignment on this 13" lathe. Alignment was done over a year ago, it's still perfect. A tightened tailstock spindle is necessary for proper alignment as well as to start to drill a hole. The loosening of the spindle indicated a 0.001" error. Once the centre-drill located the hole the spindle can be loosened. Recommended procedure. In this case the MT5 to MT3 adaptor needed. In case of a 10" Atlas lathe MT3 taper dead center is good for the spindle and for the tailstock.
